The children were hungry and cold. Sheila had nothing to feed them. Every corner of her home echoed with their cries, and each sob felt like a dagger to her heart. While she tried to figure out how to deal with her dire state, her anxiety skyrocketed. Panic attacks had become a daily torment, but they always had to take a back seat. For Sheila, there was no room to acknowledge her mental health struggles when the immediate need was to feed her children. The gnawing fear of failing them haunted her every waking moment. First and foremost, she and her kids had to eat. The weight of their survival rested solely on her shoulders, pushing her deeper into a spiral of despair.
When Halima told her husband she was depressed, he didn’t quite understand her. He looked at her with confusion and a hint of helplessness. She curled up in bed, feeling isolated in her struggle. It wasn’t his fault; in their community, mental health was a subject wrapped in stigma and ignorance. Halima herself had only recently started to recognize her feelings as depression, a real disease that gripped her mind and soul. The days felt longer, and the nights were an endless abyss. Without the words or knowledge to explain her condition, she felt trapped in a cycle of sadness and isolation, yearning for someone to understand the silent battles she faced daily.
